Children are often asked what they would like to be when they grow up. With the usual exclamations of ‘Astronaut! Doctor! Teacher! Engineer!’ topping the list and with most kids aspiring to pursue mainstream professions they see their parents or family members in, we barely question their choices. After all, these professions have their specific success stories. But will these mainstream careers be as popular as they are now or will others replace them? With new developments in science, technology and medicine every day, several new occupations are emerging while many go obsolete.
So what does the future hold? What jobs do ‘futurologists’ predict will be THE best paying jobs of the future? Based on today’s changing trends and future predictions, here they are:
Using advanced mathematics and statistics, actuaries analyze the financial costs of risk and uncertainty for consulting firms, banks, insurance companies and the government. According to US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment outlook for actuaries is expected to increase by 27 per cent from 2010 to 2020, a growth rate which is faster than the average of all occupations. It is definitely one of the top 10 jobs of the future and actuaries earned a median salary of $87,650 in May 2010. Besides being mostly employed by insurance companies, many industry insiders believe that actuaries will make way in the medical industry in the future as well. New government regulations and changes in healthcare laws will also build up demand for consulting actuaries who evaluate healthcare plans for companies.
2. Personal Financial Advisors:
Personal financial advisors are responsible for giving financial advice to people and assisting them with their investments, taxes and insurance etc. According to BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics), the employment of personal financial advisors is expected to grow by 32 percent from 2010 to 2020, which is much faster than the average of all other occupations. Growth in field is mainly attributed to the aging population; as “large numbers of baby boomers approach retirement, they will seek planning advice from personal financial advisors” - (BLS). The trend for hiring personal financial advisors will also continue as the state cuts back pensions and retirement funds, leading to a demand for good financial planning by individuals. In May 2010, according to BLS, the median annual salary for personal financial advisors was $64,750.
3. Registered Nurses:
You cannot lose if you bet on the Health Care Sector. Registered Nurses (RNs) provide direct patient care and coordinate different patient activities, besides educating patients and the general public about various heath conditions as well as providing emotional support to patients and their family members. According to BLS, the employment of RNs is expected to grow by 26% from 2010 to 2020 and employment opportunities are deemed excellent as “ to attract and keep qualified nurses, hospitals may offer signing bonuses, family-friendly work schedules, or subsidized training”.
4. Accountants and Auditors:
Almost all businesses use accountants to manage all their books and financial statements. According to BLS, employment of accountants and editors is expected to grow by 16 per cent from 2010 to 2020. The increased globalization and international trade will lead to a continued demand for accounting expertise. Certified Public Accountants ( CPA) would have more lucrative opportunities owing to the advanced nature of their accounting qualifications. According to BLS, the median annual wage of accountants and auditors was $61,690 in May 2010.
5. Management Analysts:
If managers make the right decisions, the organization remains profitable. Management analysts, also called management consultants, advise managers on how to make their organizations more efficient and profitable through increased revenue and reduced costs. According to BLS, the median annual salary of management analysts was $78,160 in May 2010 and employment of management analysts is expected to grow by 22 percent from 2010 to 2020.
6. Computer Applications Software Engineers:
New software applications are in vogue nowadays and software developers and engineers are in constantly high demand. As the mobile industry churns out a new model every few days, and advanced computer technologies take the centre stage, computer applications software engineers have an occupation that comfortably makes up the top 10 jobs of the future. According to BLS, the median annual salary of computer applications software engineers was $87,790 and in future, the employment of software developers is expected to grow 28 percent from 2010 to 2020.
7. Physicians and Surgeons:
Physicians and surgeons form the backbone of any medical profession as they perform the vital task of diagnosing and treating injuries and various illnesses of their patients. BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) states that this sector is expected to grow by 24% from 2010 to 2020 with the median annual pay being $166,400 in May 2010.

According to BLS, the employment of computer systems is expected to grow by 22% from 2010 to 2020 with the median salary of computer system analysts being $77,740 in May 2010.
9. Market Research Analysts:
Market research analysts form an important link between the company and the consumers by helping companies what consumers want. Market research analysts study the local, regional and even the national demographic and other market conditions to identify potential sales of a product or a service. Market research analysts will be in demand in the next few years as companies grow increasingly global and venture into new cultures and cater to new audiences. 10. Civil Engineers:
With a continuous population growth and a need to constantly rebuild infrastructure and ensure good maintenance of bridges, road, levees, dams etc, civil engineers will always be in demand and the occupation will maintain a position in the top 10 jobs of the future. According to BLS, the employment of civil engineers is expected to grow 19 percent from 2010 to 2020 with the median annual wage being $77,560 in May 2010.

Defining Manipulative Behavior (Manipulation vs. Persuasion)
Many people confuse manipulation and persuasion. Often, this confusion creates unnecessary resentment amongst honest co-workers.
The rule of thumb is just because someone is trying to get you to do something does not mean they are attempting to manipulate you. It's important to be able to decipher which is which and act accordingly.

To determine which is which, step back and and analyze the situation as a 3rd party. Taking any preconceived notions and emotions out of the equation will help you determine if taking some action will be beneficial to both parties or whether it can potentially hurt you.
Operating in a Grey Area
For many young professionals, it's often hard to decipher if a co-worker is attempting to manipulate or persuade. Unfortunately, the more effective and, thus harmful manipulators are, the less assuming they can be.
Frequently, intentions are benign. Nonetheless, when operating in a grey area, blindly trusting a fellow employee you don't know well can lead to undesirable outcomes.
Yet, coming across as overly suspicious will alienate others and make your tenure at the firm an unhappy, unproductive and uncomfortable one.
When in doubt, it's best to think logically about the situation, remain somewhat distant and keep your professionalism.
Are You Prone to Being Manipulated?
There are some personalities that are more prone to being exploited by manipulators. Among other traits, manipulators actively look for people who are always attempting to please others, need consistent approval, who lack assertiveness, are naive, overly dependent, impressionable and who are impulsive.

Also, there is safety in numbers. Begin gravitating towards those who are friendly, confident and hard working. While you can't change your self-esteem overnight, you can alter the groups you associate with starting tomorrow.
4 Ways to Deal with Manipulative Employees
Since you will come across manipulative co-workers, it's best to know how to effectively maintain a healthy relationship with them.
Here are a few ways how to do so:
1. Try to see things from his / her perspective -
The most effective way to deal with manipulative employees is to determine why they are behaving the way they are. Possibly the individual is used to behavior in this manner and has seen it work in the past. Maybe it's the only way they can get someone's attention.
Instead of condemning their behavior, try to understand it. Seeing things from their perspective is the first step to being able to effectively have a working relationship with these people.
2. Remain professional and find the good in him / her -
The most efficient way to handle manipulative behavior is to remain professional, speak no bad of the person and determine some of their finer points.
The worst way to do so is to is to criticize them as they will only go to further lengths to justify their actions.
Often, things are not black and white, thus chances are that this person is not entirely bad. When we forget about their less attractive qualities and focus on some of their more likable attributes this shows in our interaction and will make the person like you more and want to cross you less.
3. Don't let their behavior dictate how you feel or act -
Although it's easier said than done, the worst way to deal with manipulative co-workers is to let them dictate your feelings. If your co-worker is controlling, becoming angry or visibly upset with their behavior is only going to add fuel to the fire.
Rather, it's most effective when you realize that you can't control their actions, though you can control how you respond to them. Remain calm and go about work in a friendly, positive and diligent manner regardless of how your co-workers are approaching things.
Never get down to their level and try to manipulate others or pay them back via their own actions. Rise above it.
4. Act only in mutually beneficial situations and don't be afraid to say "no" -
Just because a manipulative co-worker makes a request, it does not mean that action in of itself is manipulative. Sometimes, their advice will prove useful.
It's best to keep an open mind and, prior to blindly saying "yes" or "no" to a request, analyze how taking action will help or hurt you and, if it's the latter don't be afraid to say "no." Assertiveness is one key to keeping a controlling co-worker in check.
In the End
Manipulative behavior in the workforce has the opposite of the desired effect. Almost without exception, manipulative people make less money, lead unhappy lives both in and out of work, deal with heightened stress levels and have less job security.
The people who make it in the long-term are the ones who are honest, hard working and who are able to maintain professionalism. Remain the latter and you'll do very well in your career.

We’ve all been there in life – an awkward moment that makes you want to turn and run for the hills. One place you wouldn’t want to experience this is an interview for your dream job. There are lots of things that can happen during an interview to make the situation uncomfortable.
Here are a few situations that you might encounter and ways to turn the awkwardness into success.
You Forget Their Name
It has been said that the sweetest sounds to a person’s ear is their own name. People love to know that you’re focused on what they are saying, their thoughts and them as a person. Saying things like, “Mr Smith, I totally understand,” is a great way to charm the interviewer and stay on their good side. It also brings their focus back to what you are saying if you name them in mid-sentence or idea. The awkward problem in an interview would be if you begin to say their name and forget it, or even worse, call them by the wrong name. That alone can make an interview go from good to bad in seconds.
If you can’t remember their name when you’re leaving the interview (you should know their name and contact info to send a follow up thank you!) ask them, but with a spin. Say, “What was your name again?” and they will probably tell you, but feel disappointed you couldn’t remember. So in return you emphatically reply, “Oh sorry, no, your last name”. If this doesn’t work, ask for a business card. This will give you both their first and last name, so you can address them and contact them later without looking like a dud for forgetting.
If you’re in the middle of the interview and say the wrong name, or begin to address them and forget, just try to relax. If you get flustered and they notice, it will throw you off your interview game. Stealthily look around for a name plate, degree on the wall or any sort of sign they might have. If you’ve called them by the wrong name, you’ll be able to tell by the look on their face. A good cover up line is, “I’m so sorry! You just remind me so much of my former teacher that it just came out”. It’s also okay to blame the nerves – simply explain that you were focused on doing well in the interview, and their name slipped your mind.
To ensure this doesn’t happen to you, repeat their name early and repeat it often. When they first introduce themselves or are introduced by others, repeat their name back to them and use it from there on out. “It’s so nice to meet you, Megan” and then “What school did you go to, Megan?” This will help you remember for later.
The Awkward Silence
You can practically hear the crickets chirping after you answered a question. Don’t sweat it if the interviewer is taking notes, because they might just be a slow writer. If they’re staring at you, you might have to be quick on your feet with some more explanation of what you meant.
Try asking, “Does that answer your question?” or “Does that make sense?” This will give them the chance to say yes or no, and depending on their response, you’ll know which direction to go.
Some interviewers do this pause on purpose, because it makes you feel nervous and chances are you will say anything to fill the gap. Be aware of this, and have something ready to talk about. It you think it through ahead of time, you won’t trip on your words and you’ll remain professional.
Anything can happen when you put two people in a room to talk. Bodily functions, interrupting phone calls, clashing of chemistry, or things outside your control such as the fire alarm sounding can happen to anyone. It’s impossible to plan for every situation, but having a carefree attitude when things get sticky is good practice.
This can be done by taking a lighthearted approach to humor when things go south. Sometimes it’s okay to bring attention to the awkwardness of the situation which will ease the tension. When the time is right, throw in a little one liner with a smile or giggle. It’s okay to laugh at yourself, but don’t overdo it because you want to remain serious. If the interviewer throws out a joke, make sure you laugh! Laughing will automatically make your body feel more relaxed, get you on their good side and fill the silence.
Another way to cope is to remain focused. Ignore the situation, and continue talking about your talents and experience. Once you talk for a few more minutes, the interviewer will probably forget too and be more interested in what you are saying. Now would be a great time to throw out the name tip from earlier, because it will ensure they are listening to what you’re saying.
No matter what life throws at you during an interview, if you remain calm and professional, you’ll be fine. Be sure to research the company and have some pre-planned talking points, so you can be quick on your feet in any situation.

But as much as your resume can highlight your past achievements; it can also mean that you are at risk of dwelling a little too much on the past.
Yes you may have a great track record when it comes to your employment history (not necessarily meaning you are over the hill), but you want to concentrate on the here and now – so try and make sure your resume reflects the recent rather than painting a portrait of the past.
People’s attention spans are shorter these days, so if you are worried that your age, education history and employment record maybe holding you back, why not use this to your advantage and try adapting your approach somewhat?
1. Remove Your Age
Thanks to discrimination laws you are not required to put your age on your CV– so why do it? Most people spend their lives avoiding telling people how old they are, so to offer such information voluntarily is unnecessary. An employer should be able to put together a picture of your experience and work history from the other jobs you have listed and age has nothing to do with it.
2. Make employment History Relevant
If you’ve been working for 20 years, there’s a good chance that you have had your fair share of roles. Remove anything that is more than 15 years old. Not only will this make your resume easier on the eye; but anything longer ago than this period is basically irrelevant.
3. Structure Your Resume or CV Correctly
Plenty of people will give you advice on how your resume should look and where you should put certain pieces of information. In truth, a resume is your document that tells other people about you and what you can offer – therefore you can present it how you wish. If you left school in 1989, then there is little point in announcing this to the world. Move that meaningless school and college educational history down the page and allow the more interesting points of your life to rise to the top. You don’t even have to put the dates that you left school or even graduated.
4. Focus on Your Current Skills
The secret with ‘de-ageing’ your resume is to look at the current rather than the past. If you’ve undertaken any courses, attended training seminars or completed any qualifications at all since leaving full-time education; these are the areas you should concentrate on. Not only will it demonstrate your ability to do the job you are applying for – it will also highlight your willingness to learn.
5. Emphasise Personal Strengths
If you are someone who has good workplace experience (this doesn’t mean old) it is important that you bring these to the top of the page – literally. These strengths are just what employers are looking for and will often mean more than educational qualifications that where gained in the dim and distant past. So get them up there where everyone can see them!
