Report: Job Openings Increase in September

Simply Hired today released its October 2013 U.S. Employment Outlook report, which shows that nationwide job openings increased 6.9% month-over-month and 35% year-over-year in September 2013. Nearly all major metros (49 of 50) posted an increase in job openings, and 16 of 18 industries also experienced growth.

“Our September data shows that job growth remains strong as we move into fall,” said James Beriker, president and CEO of Simply Hired. “This is a very positive signal that the recovery is across geographies and segments – and not isolated in specific regions or job segments.”

Nearly all major metro areas post growth

In September, job openings increased in 49 of 50 major metros. Los Angeles, CA (11.5%), Sacramento, CA (10.9%) and Kansas City, MO (10.7%) experienced the largest gains month-over-month.

Job openings increase in nearly all industries and categories

Job openings increased in 16 out of 18 industries in September, with non-profit (17.8%) and construction (13.0%) showing the largest gains. Moreover, nearly all occupation categories (22 out of 23) experienced growth in job openings. Scientific and lab (21.9%) and (non-computer) engineering (21.4%) roles experienced the largest amount of growth month over month.

Healthcare remains industry with greatest job inventory

Nearly one-third of the top posting companies in September were healthcare-related (approximately 33 company locations), making healthcare the top posting industry.
