Job Openings Hold Steady in November 2013

Simply Hired® today released its December 2013 U.S. Employment Outlook report which finds that nationwide job openings increased 0.6% month-over-month in November 2013 and 52.5% year-over-year. Nearly half of all industries experienced growth, with military and non-profit showing the biggest gains in job openings.

“While we see a slight month-over-month growth in November, job listings are up more than 50% from last year,” said James Beriker, president and CEO of Simply Hired. “With job openings increasing in nearly half of all industries and across nearly one-third of job categories, there is opportunity for those looking for employment, which is positive news as we head toward the New Year.”

Job openings increase in nearly half of all industries. Job openings increased in eight out of 18 industries in November, with military (9.3%) and non-profit (3.7%) showing the largest gains. Legal (-16.9%), automotive (-13.5%) and government (-13.4%) saw a decrease during this period.

Job opening increase in nearly one-third of occupation categories. Nearly one-third of all occupation categories (seven out of 23) experienced growth in job openings in November. Scientists, social scientists and lab tech (20.6%) roles experienced the largest growth in job listings month-over-month. However, job listings for engineering (excluding computer) (-5.5%) and construction and extraction worker (-5.4%) roles faced the largest decline in November.

Healthcare continues as industry with greatest job inventory. Approximately one-third of the top posting companies in November were healthcare-related (approximately 52 company locations), making healthcare the top posting industry. Academic institutions also had a significant number of job openings.
