I Resolve To…Simply Get a Great Job

Everyone knows that the turning of the calendar from one year to another is the perfect time to make big life changes.  Whether its the end of the holiday season or some symbolic inspiration from another year getting ticked off, January seems to be the perfect time to set goals for what you want your new year, and beyond to look like.

At Simply Hired, we like to think that our year-long resolution is to help connect those in need of quality employees with talented individuals looking to make major career moves.  That being said, however, we ourselves aren’t above a little resolution inspiration to help kickstart our yearly goals. If you’re looking to find the job of your dreams or to advance your career to the next level, here are a few actionable steps you can take to meet your resolution to get a great job.

Set Manageable Goals

There’s a classic anecdote that involves a person sitting down to a meal where they must eat everything set in front of them or risk offense to a mythical great lord.  The culinary hero in our story manages to accomplish the task once they realize that the entire feast doesn’t need to be consumed in a single bite, but can be tackled over hours, or even days at the table.

Much the same can be said when setting yourself up for job-resolution success.  Instead of simply inking down on your year planner that you need to land a six-figure career, break your plan into long and short term milestones.  Refreshing that resume, applying for three positions a week, or similar incremental steps can help make your resolution seem mentally and physically attainable.

Put Yourself Out There

If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a million times, networking is an essential element to cornering the best career opportunities.  That being said, networking is often a misunderstood concept for those new to the career game. Sure, drinks at an industry or company specific function can be a great opportunity to catch up, but would-be job seekers don’t need to limit themselves to these types of cliche gatherings.

Networking should be treated as more of a concept than an individual event.  Have that old work buddy from two companies past? Why not invite them out for coffee or lunch?  Also, keep an eye out for continuing education lunches or free or low-cost seminars. These gatherings are often the perfect places to pull double duty; making connections while expanding your knowledge and skills base.
