HCA Healthcare is a Nashville-based hospital company that provides healthcare services through a network of locally-managed facilities nationwide. HCA Healthcare employs more than 200,000 people whose goal is to deliver high-quality, cost-effective healthcare.
We asked the following seven questions of Michelle Vidal, HCA Healthcare’s national director of talent acquisition operations. She has worked in recruiting and staffing for 15-plus years, including the last three years with HCA. Vidal emphasized HCA’s commitment to excellence in recruitment and discussed how candidates can catch her eye.
1. What three words would you use to describe your company culture?
Quality, caring, compassionate.
2. What’s unique about your company’s interview process?
HCA’s culture is one of excellence, and we are results-oriented. This being said, we have a very thorough interview process for all the positions at this organization. Our interview process is a two-way street, providing both our team and the candidate a chance to interview one another to ensure that we all want the same thing.
3. How does your company motivate its employees to work toward common goals?
HCA’s mission and values are at the core of everything we do. We are committed to the care and improvement of human life. When we speak of our mission, we usually think about our dedication to our patients and their families, but we are also equally committed to our employees. You are part of an organization with a long history of compassion and service. The degree to which we as an organization can provide quality healthcare service is highly dependent on how well you as an employee are able to perform your job. HCA puts patients first by implementing measures to support our employees and giving them the tools needed to be successful.
4. If you could identify one thing for candidates to remember about your company, what would it be?
HCA has a certain passion for results and a drive to be the very best in this business. What sets us apart is how very hard we work for those results. I hope all the candidates that interview here can see that immediately. Quite frankly, it may turn some of them off, but that’s desirable. We only want the best here.
5. What are your most competitive job openings available right now?
Our clinical leadership positions. These roles carry huge responsibility and have quite a large scope, autonomy and independence. The clinical leadership role at HCA is the perfect place for very high achievers who are goal-oriented but can also build successful teams.
6. Describe the most memorable candidate you’ve interviewed recently. What set that person apart?
I interviewed someone very recently whom I actually attempted to talk out of the role for which she was interviewing. She was confident, smart and very tenacious. I then started to talk her into it instead.
7. What can a candidate do to stand out for your company?
A candidate can show achievement of goals despite facing huge adversity. That’s what working in healthcare today feels like, and anyone that can show me that they triumphed in spite of challenges deserves a second look.
