Happy Labor Day from the Simply Hired Team! Put on your white shoes, seersucker suits and have a BBQ. To celebrate today we wanted to share a few facts about the holiday from the Department of Labor:
- The beginnings of the holiday are debated. It was either started by Peter J. McGuire (general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor) or Matthew Maguire (secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J.).
- New York introduced the first state bill for the holiday. However, Oregon on February 21, 1887 was the first state to pass a law regarding the holiday.
- June 28, 1894 Congress made Labor Day a national holiday.
Enjoy the start of the college football season!
