After an interview, your follow up can make or break your chances of getting the job. This extra step doesn’t take much time, but it can be a great way to stand out from other applicants. Not only this, but some hiring managers won’t hire a candidate that didn’t write them a thank you note. A recent survey by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that 5% of hiring managers believe failing to write a thank you note after an interview is a major problem or deal breaker while another 31% considered it to be somewhat of a problem. During an in-person interview, ask for your interviewers’ business cards to make sure you have their name and contact information
- Send a personal email message within 24 hours after the interview
- Thank each person you met with for taking the time to meet
- Highlight your qualifications for the position and reiterate your interest in the job
- Use this opportunity to ask any questions you forgot to ask or make additional comments
- Send the interviewer any additional materials to be considered
- Consider sending a handwritten note as well
- Keep it short
- Proofread your note before sending
