Working where you live: Part 1

In my humble opinion, being able to roll out of bed and walk 5 minutes to work would be an ideal situation. You could get hours of extra sleep each week, save money on gas, be more environmentally friendly, and never have to sit in traffic again. Though it might not be possible to live that close to work, Simply Hired has some tools to help you find a job with a shorter commute time.

Set your Distance preferences
Each time you perform a search on Simply Hired, you not only search the specific location you entered, but you search a set radius around that location (25 miles by default).

To set your distance to search for jobs closer to home, you can change the distance to show jobs closer to home in the search preferences, through an advanced search and even through the Distance drop-down menu on any search results page.

You have the choice to search jobs at the exact location you enter or all jobs within 5, 10, 15, 25 or 50 miles of that location. It might not be long before you find a job closer to home!

Celebrating Black History Month

February is Black History Month, the time of the year when we celebrate and reflect upon the lives of extraordinary African Americans throughout history. In honor of this month, we’re highlighting our diversity filter, which pulls jobs from Diversity Inc’s annual list of Top 50 Companies for Diversity. These companies are chosen based on their dedication to diversity in the workplace. The diversity filter can also be found under the special searches page or under the special filters on any results page.

Need ideas for a career change? Be inspired by what some famous African Americans devoted their lives to:

• George Washington Carver – Agricultural Scientist
• Margaret Walker – Writer

Supporting Our Community

Last November, Simply Hired participated in a food drive with all donations going to the Second Harvest Food Bank. We donated more than 2,000 lbs of food and over $500 this year to people in need! Because of the amazingly generous people who work at Simply Hired, the company was given a Gold Certificate of Appreciation at the Second Harvest Food Bank Reception, attended by some of our employees last week.

Thanks to all of the employees at Simply Hired who participated, and a big THANK YOU to the Second Harvest Food Bank for doing all the great work that they do!

Find and Share Jobs on Plaxo

Social networking sites are widely known as ways to keep in contact or connect with friends, family, or even work connections. However, Simply Hired and Plaxo, a popular social network for post-college professionals, have recently formed a partnership that allows Plaxo members to use their social network to find their dream job or to help a friend find their perfect job. This partnership also extends the reach of Simply Hired advertisers to this vibrant market of 25 million passive job seekers.

If you’re a member of Plaxo in the US, you’ll now find a new Jobs section on Plaxo.com that taps into the Simply Hired database. Jobs on Plaxo can become “social job listings” with the capacity to be shared throughout your network, re-shared and commented upon like other shared content on Plaxo.

So say you have a brother or sister who is on the hunt for a job and you’re an awesome sibling who’s on the lookout for them. If you find a job that you think might tickle their fancy, you’ll be able to send it to them. You could even include a comment about how by getting a job, they’ll be able to afford their own place and move off your couch. ;)

In addition, Plaxo members will occasionally see targeted job listings in their Pulse streams that match the professional information on their profile. The jobs will come to you!

It’s that time of the year again— girls are sighing, boys are groaning and there have been sightings of cute cherubs shooting heart-shaped arrows at unsuspecting people. Yes, tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. But today, there’s more to love than your significant other… you can love your job too!
