A Haunted Halloween

Happy Halloween all you ghouls and boys!

Hamburger PumpkinGuillotine For the past week, Simply Hired has had some frightening festivities to get in the Halloween sprit. We started it off last Friday with a company-wide pumpkin carving contest, where people really busted out their creative skills. Among the contenders were a globe pumpkin to commemorate our recent international release, a guillotine scene complete with fake blood, a cannibalistic pumpkin eating a smaller pumpkin hamburger, a larger-than-life Simply Hired logo, a Mr. Potato Head Dracula pumpkin, and Nemo (we found him). The hamburger-eating pumpkin was declared the winner.

Team Gold FishToday was Simply Hired’s Halloween party which consisted of good food, lots of candy, games and the event we were all waiting for: the costume contest. I wish I had pictures of some of the costumes (maybe I’ll get some up soon) because if you thought our pumpkins were creative, these getups were absolutely amazing. They ranged from metallic robots complete with LCD lights, to big babies (the new father of the staff), to states of weather (hydraulics included), “customer engagement” proposing with flowers and ring in hand, and many more. If only every day was like this…

Have a spooky evening!

Going Global

Where in the world is Simply Hired? Well, we’re not only in the United States anymore!

Today, Simply Hired launched international job search sites in four countries: Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and India. The sites will have many of the features that you know and love including advanced search, browsing by job category, results filters (by job title, company location, job type, date posted, etc.), and the ability to show only the new jobs posted since your last visit. You can even view RSS feeds for your searches!

My favorite things about the international sites:
1) We now have a navigation area at the bottom of the homepages of the international sites, including the U.S. site so you can easily access any of the sites:

International home menu

There’s also an easy country pull-down menu in the top right of the results page to switch between international sites. You can jump from country to country and no passports are needed!

2) The Simply Hired logos on each of the international sites have mini-versions of the flag from that respective country. In all of your country hopping, you’ll always know which site you’re on and won’t get lost in the process. You can leave your map at home for these travels!

Columbus Day Job Hunting

On Columbus Day, we commemorate Chistopher Columbus’ landing in the Americas back in 1492. But here at Simply Hired, we want you to land (hah!) your dream job today, despite a hurting economic climate.

Explore Your Network

Increasingly, people are using social networking sites to advance their career or discover a new one. According to a recent article on VentureBeat, LinkedIn reported a 50% increase of site usage by financial industry members during the week of September 7th. Even if the people you know can’t offer you a position, they are a great source to point you to someone who can. To help you use your network, our “Who Do I Know” feature allows you to view your LinkedIn connections at each company without interrupting your Simply Hired search. (Read more.)

Channel Your Inner Compass

Being creative and flexible can help expand your job search by pointing you in directions you haven’t explored yet. If you’re a former financial industry worker, many of the skills you acquired can lead you in a number of different directions – both in terms of career paths and geography. For anyone who has ever considered moving deep in the heart of Texas, now’s a good time to do it. Texas is home to the top three hottest job markets according to bizjournal’s 2008 employment rankings: 1. Houston, 2. Austin and 3. Dallas-Fort Worth.

Eco-Friendly could mean “Economically-Friendly”…

If you’re trying to make the move away from the financial sector, marketing those transferable skills will help you get related jobs such as industry analyst jobs, accounting jobs, and auditing jobs. Incidentally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts accounting and auditing jobs to increase by 16 percent between the years 2006 and 2016, which is faster than the national average of all jobs.

And now we'll leave you with the classic joke: How did Christopher Columbus finance his trip to America? He used his Discover Card!

If you’ve ever thought about “Going Green”...

... right now might be a good time to start!

According to the study US Metro Economies: Current and Potential Jobs in the US Economy released last week by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, there will be an estimated 4.2 million ecologically friendly jobs in 30 years due to an expected shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy and efficiency. Currently there are about 750,000 “green” jobs in the United States.

Examples of these “green-collar” jobs include environmental lawyer jobs ,  alternative energy jobs, recycling jobs, construction jobs, and manufacturing jobs .

Want to get started on your green search? Check out Simply Hired’s Eco-Friendly job filter, brought to you in partnership with Care2.
